When I first heard about this case a year ago, I was appalled.
Many of you know the story. Genarlow Wilson was a good student and great athlete. He never had a criminal record and stayed out of trouble. Then why has he been in jail for the past 2 years? He was convicted of having consensual sex when he was 17 with a 15 year old girl. At the time, there was an archaic Georgia law that made this action a felony, punishable by 10 years and requiring the offender to register as a sex offender. Are you appalled yet? Wait, you are about to be furious.
This law is now void. It was changed mainly in response to Wilson’s case but it is not retroactive. Wait don’t get mad yet…
On Monday, a judge voided Wilson’s 10 year sentence. In the midst of Wilson’s mother and his attorney rejoicing due to justice finally being served, their celebrating was cute short. The Attorney General, Thurbert Baker, appealed the decision to overturn Wilson’s sentence, leaving the now 20 year old behind bars.
Racism you cry? Hold that thought, Thurbert Baker the Attorney General is black. Now get mad.
Words can’t describe how this case has left me feeling. I am so sad that this young man with so much promise is sitting behind bars for something a lot teens are doing… having sex. That’s ridiculous.
