Diary of the Bougie Broad

Life through the eyes of a young, quirky, intelligent, bougie broad.

Bougie.  Snobby.  Bratty.  Spoiled.  Uppity.  Pretentious.  Stuck up.  Snotty.  Self-centered.  Vain.  Conceited.  Sadiddy.  Bitchy.  Selfish.  Yes I have heard them all.  Do these words truly describe me? Not so much.  But either way, these words and many others, have shaped my thinking, how I see the world, and how I live my life.  My blog entries are not meant to be deep, educational, or life changing.  Rather just thought provoking.  I want to foster conversation (good or bad).  Thank you for gracing me with your presence (or should you be thanking me...hmmmm... just kidding!)

Leave Oprah Alone!

Yes I am late in responding to this one, but better late than never.

I am going to keep this one short and sweet.

"I became so frustrated with visiting inner-city schools that I just stopped going. The sense that you need to learn just isn't there.  If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don't ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school."—Oprah Winfrey

Why is everyone so upset with Oprah?  Is it because she spoke the TRUTH?  Or maybe because she has an opinion that hits too close to home?

Look, Oprah is entitled her opinion and the above statement is just that—an opinion.  You can’t get mad at someone for drawing their own conclusions from their own personal experiences.  I feel like her comment is not news to anyone but by the mere fact of her fame, it’s a big deal.  She is frustrated and has every right to voice her frustrations.

We (Americans) are spoiled and materialistic, plain and simple.  We are extremely privileged (for the most part) when compared to other countries and that’s the truth.  Oprah is a very wealthy woman and has every right to do with her money as she wishes.  I think what she did for South Africa is a great thing and building a school was filling a huge need.  I think we are forgetting that just because she has a ton of money, that doesn’t mean she has to share it or give it away.  I think it is great that she gives back but I think people are forgetting that she doesn’t have to do anything but be black, pay taxes and die.

I feel like people are complaining to the wrong folks.  Yes there are many problems with our public school systems but Oprah or any other celebrity should not be expected to fix them.  Try the government, parents, and the community.

Ok I am done.  Let the comments begin!
