Why am I fascinated with “reality” television and celebrities?

Here’s another one of my random streams of thought…
I have been thinking a lot about the types of television programs I watch, radio programs I listen to, and the types of publications I read. What prompted my thoughts to flow about this topic, you ask? Well, this morning the radio personality on Hot 99.5 (no jokes about why I was listening to this station), Kane, had a segment called “War of the Roses” (take a listen). I think he has this segment once a week in which he basically helps folks catch their significant others in a lie and prove that they are cheating. Well this morning as I am driving into work, I am sitting here listening to this woman basically find out that her man has been cheating on her and got some other chick pregnant live, on air. Why do I find this entertaining (not in the sense of ha ha funny)? Like I really found myself talking to dude through the radio lol.
On a daily basis, I browse gossip blogs and columns and tune into some type of reality television program once I get home. Even local and national news programs fascinate me. Like why do I care if Beyoncé and Jay-Z get married or if Britney is going to flash her goodies to the paparazzi again? I guess it just amuses me lol?
I’ve come to realize that Americans are voyeurs to a certain extent (or is it just me) hence the popularity and success of “reality” television. People like to connect with these “reality” television characters and take an interest in their situations, struggles and successes. I wonder what that says about our own lives? I guess after working 8+ hours a day it’s nice to be able to watch something that requires no brain power whatsoever.
I find it odd that more people don’t watch and/or read the news—I guess that’s too real for folks!
